What is a digital nomad?

A digital nomad is a person who uses technology, such as laptops, smartphones, and the internet, to work remotely from anywhere in the world. They typically do not have a fixed location and often travel from one place to another while working.

Digital nomads are usually freelancers, entrepreneurs, or remote employees who have the freedom to work on their own schedule and from any location. The term "digital nomad" has become increasingly popular in recent years as more and more people embrace the flexibility of remote work and the freedom to live and work from anywhere.

Government initiative for Digital Nomads in Italy 2023

Italy’s €1 Billion cash pot to lure Digital Nomads. If there was ever a time to become a digital nomad and move to Italy, now would be it. Italy has around 5,500 villages with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants. These villages are in some of the nicest, picturesque areas of Italy, like Tuscany, Puglia and Calabria.

The Italian government have set aside €1 billion to bring these ghost towns back into the 21st century. The plan includes turning these villages into remote working hubs with high speed internet and access to main towns/cities creating transport links to allow these villages to thrive once more. Funds for this project derive from the EU post-pandemic recovery package. World Economic Forum estimates that 48% of global employees will work partly from home after the pandemic.

Local mayors are also pushing to revive these ghost towns with houses selling for little as €1. New homeowners are required to renovate the property and in some circumstances are contracted to stay in the village for minimum 3/5 years.
